THE LEGEND MR. AHMED ISMAIL BADAT
Ahmed Ismail Badat (Chhotabhai) was born in a poor humble family in an unremarkable village called Nani Naroli on 30th April 1933 and died peacefully in his home on Friday 18th September 2020, surrounded by his loving family.
There was no school in the village to speak of what so education he received was in Mangrol Boarding School for a year and then he was moved to Ghara School, both running on charity.
He was precocious child and legend has it that he had read all the books in the village library in his teens; He also became very fluent in English which opened up the literature of the West.
After high school he worked for the newly established Vohra Samachar, for two and half years based in Surat staying in Botawala Musafarkhana. He was given the task of recruiting new members from the Vohra villages. He had to trek from village to village in unforgiving heat and rain and convince leading figures in the society to join the organisation and a sometimes he had to suffer abuse, but from this work galvanised him for difficult work that lay ahead. He was very successful in enrolling new members given his great social skill and rhetoric but what he earned from his work just enough to pay for his living expenses so he decided to move on.
Eventually he landed a secure job as a duty clerk in Mumbai docks where a lot of employees were ex criminals and he had to work with very hostile Marathas, but even here he thrived because he had a sweet tongue and he knew how to win people over.
He was beginning to enjoy life but his thoughts were always of his poor relatives and friends in India and he found a way of helping them through a voucher system that was operating in the UK to bring in skilled and semi-skilled workforce to build the economy decimated by the second world war. The fact that he called many over to the UK, mostly poor and illiterate from Nani Naroli and surrounding district was an epic feat in itself.
He was active in establishing The Indian Muslim Federation in late sixties with aim of helping and uniting our community.
He was champion for education and believed that there can be no future for the poor except through literacy and was instrumental in financing the building of high school in Nani Naroli with his closest buddy Yusuf Badat and his brother Ibrahim Badat, Mowlana Ishak Aswat mentioned at his Janaza Namaz that, 'I was sworn to secrecy but I have to declare that this man that we bury today deserves the highest place in Jannate Firdous for his humanitarian work in settling at least a hundred and fifty to two hundred families in my knowledge.'
He came into my life in India in May 1965 when I was thirteen and had a great impact on my own development; he remains my great role model and a great inspiration and I would not be the person I am today without him - my respected uncle, a great son of Nani Naroli, a pride to Vohra community, a great humanitarian…may Allah grant his soul peace and love in the highest abode of Jannat…Aamin.
